Contemplative prayer requires a letting go of ‘knowing’ and of certainty. This book group will explore the well-loved and profound mediaeval text The Cloud of Unknowing as a way into a deeper understanding of such prayer.
The Cloud of Unknowing counsels a young student to seek the Divine not through knowledge or intellect but through contemplation motivated by love.
This book group, across six evenings, will invite participants to discuss and reflect upon the text, as well as exploring their own approach to contemplative prayer. It will be best suited to those who can obtain and read a translation of the text and attend all or several sessions.
Our recommended translation is by Middle English scholar Carmen Acevedo Butcher. There are two copies in the library at Whirlow.
Booking - six sessions on 9 & 23 Sep; 7 & 14 Oct; 4 & 25 Nov.
All 7.30 - 9pm. A programme of chapters for reading and suggested areas for conversation will be provided by email about one week before each session.
